HOW DID THE AG-1 COME ABOUT?
"In 2005 I was playing adult league hockey and took a very hard shot directly on my ankle bone that took ten months to heal. I then tried many different options to protect my ankle while playing but nothing worked. Every time I got hit in the ankle by a stick or puck, I was out of the game.
I got the idea from a Snapple cap. A shape like that would slow down the pucks energy and disperse the energy over an area instead of just on the one spot where it hit. The first ones were made in an upholstery shop and to my surprise, they worked."
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT THAN A SHOT BLOCKER?
"Shot Blocker" is a term that we try not to use because it means that it's only for players who block shots. As the AG-1 is protection, it's for all players just like a helmet, shoulder pads, gloves and shin guards.
The other products on the market all provide basic protection over the skate and can interfere with skating performance. dflxGEAR's AG-1 provides protection for the most vital part of the foot, the ankle and instep, without interfering with skating. We were also able to get a US Utility Patent on how the ankle protection works and not just on the design of the product.
I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THIS. WHY DO I NEED IT?
Skates have typically been made of padded leather and provided a decent level of protection from the lower impact forces generated by the shots of their day. Foot protection wasn't necessary and typically only used after an injury.
Today skates are mostly very thin, man made, heat moldable materials that give the skate amazing performance but they form perfectly to the foot with a very thin layer of material. Also, today's stick technology allows almost all young adult and adult players to generate a shot of 70 mph or more.
The speed and force of shots in all levels and age groups of hockey have increased and this is why foot protection is needed, similar to helmets being required as the pace of the game increased.
WHY DO I NEED THE MG-1 MOUTH GUARD?
Your typical sporting good store or hockey shop mouth guard does a decent job of protecting your teeth but the quality is nowhere near that of the MG-1 and MG-1Y. Our mouth guards are as close to custom dental mouth guards as you can get at approximately one third the price.
No other mouth guard on the market will show the player and coaching staff when dehydration is about to set in and this can be crucial for the overall health of the athlete.
